What We Believe
In common with all Christian Churches our belief is rooted in

A God who created the world, restored a broken humanity,
and who offers new life in Christ.

Those seeking Christian spirituality might explore some simple Christian reflections:

  • We believe in one God, mystery at the heart of the created universe,
    mystery at the centre of our human existence.

  • We believe we meet this God in the historical figure of Jesus Christ the man from Nazareth,
    in whom, said St Paul, 'the fullness of God was pleased to dwell'.

  • We follow Jesus' teaching that we should love God and also love our neighbour.
    He lived that way himself, rejecting violence, and dying for us all on a Roman cross.

  • We believe in being communities, embedded in the world, but following
    Christ’s footsteps in loving others, and restoring human community.

Our beliefs, in more, poetic and sophisticated forms can be found in the ancient Apostles and Nicene creeds, and these, and occasional new versions, can be found in the Scottish Episcopal Church’s Liturgies. Click on Liturgy on the SEC main website here.

The Diocese of Brechin
The Diocese is one of the seven Dioceses that make up the Scottish Episcopal Church. This Church is part of the world-wide Anglican Community, and is in full Communion with the Church of England, the Church of Ireland and the Church in Wales. Our worship and liturgy reflect Anglican theology.

The Diocese comprises the east of Scotland between the village of Glencarse (just outside Perth and on the A90) and the outskirts of the city of Aberdeen. Geographically this is the smallest Diocese in the Scottish Episcopal Church, though in terms of numbers of clergy and people, the area covered has always been strong in Episcopacy.

Many of our churches are beautiful examples of Victorian Architecture. In particular, St Salvador’s Church in Dundee’s Hilltown area is a fine example of a Bodley church. Built in one of Dundee’s poorest slum areas this church still serves local people, among them many of Dundee’s disadvantaged.

The Cathedral Church of St Paul, located in Dundee’s High Street, was designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott and boasts the tallest spire in the city. For a very long time St Paul’s has taken on a role as one of Dundee’s ‘civic churches’ used regularly by the City Council and the University of Dundee.

We are a Diocese wholly committed through our Life in Christ to living the Christian Gospel and helping to serve our local communities.

If you live in this area, please drop into one of our churches and make yourself known. All our churches will provide you with a very warm welcome.

Prayer for the Season:

God of all time, we worship you in your changlessness, and thank you for your ever-changing creation.

As we enter a New Year knowing that we will encounter both joy and sorrow we offer Reinhold Neibuhr's Serenity prayer.

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as Christ did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with Him Forever in the next.

Amen.
